In English

Clean Monday (Greek: Kathara Deutera), also known as Pure Monday is a movable feast that occurs at the beginning of the 7th week before Orthodox Easter Sunday. Is a public holiday in Greece, where it is celebrated with outdoor excursions, the consumption of shelfish, “taramosalata” and other fasting food, a special kind of bread, baked only on that day, named “lagana” and the widespread custom of flying kites. Kite cookies then, for Clean Monday. Hm, cookies not so fasting food, but… 🙂 And a video tutorial.

  1. Καλά είναι πανέμορφα Άντα μου! Με ξεσηκώνεις! Φιλιά πολλά, να περνάτε υπέροχα!

  2. I love the idea of kite flying as a holiday tradition! It must be beautiful to see lots of kites flying in the sky! Your cookies are also perfectly timed for the windy month of March (windy spring weather in the US, anyway 🙂 ) I am curious about “fasting food”. In Judaism when we fast, we don’t eat anything at all for 24 hours. Could you explain Greek Orthodox fasting food?

    • March can be really windy, here too, Wendy, sometimes is fierce with even snow!! In Greek Orthodox church there is a fasting period, from Clean Monday to Easter Sunday. In this period we are supposed to eat everything except meat and it’s products, chicken and its product, poultry generally. We can eat all the vegetables, legumes, fish and seefood, and avoid the oil consuming every Wednesday and Friday. The truth is that only few people follow this fasting program, most of us we only fasting in Holly Week.
